An active pipe failure can put a lot of water where it shouldn't be fast. The steps below protect people and property first, then we look at the repair.
If water is actively flowing
- 1Shut off the water at the main valve if it's safe to reach it. That's the single most useful thing you can do.
- 2Avoid electrical areas that are wet or near the leak. Don't wade into standing water near outlets or panels.
- 3Protect what you can: move belongings, contain water with towels or bins where practical.
- 4Arrange professional help for the repair and a closer look at the cause.

Confirm the water is off and the leak area is safe to approach.
Find the failure
Locate the actual break and what section of line it's on.
Check the cause

Repair or replace
Patch the section or replace the run, depending on the condition of the line.
Get the water off, then get help
